Dress for Success

Prom Dresses

Most college students trek across their campuses to classes attired in their most comfortable apparel.

"Typically students at Rutgers aim their wardrobe to whatever is comfortable and whatever they found last minute before rushing to catch a bus—a T-shirt and a hoodie are key staples for a student," says Bianca Rivera, a student at Rutgers University.

At The King's College the city is the campus, and going to classes in the Empire State Building is far from normal. A business casual dress code defies the style standards of most college students.

While "dress code" may have negative connotations, the students at King's approach the expectations positively and embrace the dress code with individuality: students are proud of their diverse interpretations of the code.

The dress code is not always taken seriously. Some dress more on the "casual" than the "business" side of the term. Others violate the "no jeans" rule - slipping into class with black or dark blue denim pants. Peer-accountability steps in: students are responsible for and encouraged to hold each other accountable to the dress code.

Part of the challenge is understanding what business casual actually is.

The dress code, as stated in the 2010-2011 Student Handbook, suggests students' attire should "[reflect] our College mission statement, whom we expect to encounter, and what type of first impression we seek to create."

Some students have a straightforward interpretation:

"To me business casual is what you would feel comfortable wearing to a nice family dinner." Kevin Oko ‘14

"Originally, I thought we had to wear slacks, nice shirts, pencil skirts, that sort of thing, but now I think we basically just have to look classy." Emily Barriball ‘14

"Business casual is attire that is appropriate for a relaxed business setting." Daniel Kim ‘13

Others focus on the big-picture:

"Our dress code is a catalyst to a professional perspective on academics. It's a way of formalizing our education, to show the difference between a King's education and that of any other college in New York City." Jube Charles ‘14

"I like the dress code in the sense that it's respectful to the prestige of the Empire State Building. Having gone to another college with no dress code, I know what it's like to go to class with people who are in their pajamas. I much prefer the class atmosphere at King's." Tia Brown 13'

"We go to a school that holds us to both high academic and moral standards. Our attire should convey an image of success. We are in New York City. There are opportunities around every corner." Saddam Bello 14'

Interpretations on the code range from suit jackets and blazers to sequin-embellished tunics, oxfords to Vans slip-ons, and from slacks to mere leggings for bottoms.

"For business casual, I always go for wearing a vest. It just makes the outfit look more put together, refined, and attractive. Overall, scarves are my absolute favorite accessories. They throw a quirky twist on any outfit." says Namtam Ho, ‘14

"A 2 or 3-piece suit accessorized with a bow tie and matching handkerchief," says Charles Carman ‘14 referring to how he meets his goal of mixing "funky-cool with sophistication."

"For specific outfits, you could check out my blog, ‘Adventures in Business Casual,' but general principles are mixing and matching. Having a few standard pieces to which you can add different signature pieces is huge," advises Alexandra Harrison ‘12.

The Verdict

Ultimately, the code should not be feared. It is a guideline and guidelines are a realistic part of the professional world. The code is not designed to stifle self expression. So throw on that scarf and rock the bow-tie. Own your style with purpose, but remember, as Alexandra Harrison advises: "dressing nicely sends the message that we're a serious college in a serious place."

Alexandra's point in case: "An ESB guard told me he thought we had to be an Ivy League school because we dressed so well."
