CHATFIELD: Roomful of dress blues a sight to behold

Herve Leger Dress sale
There is something awe-inspiring about being in a room with 700 or so Marines in their dress blues uniform. It is a beautiful sight. Maybe it's the cut of the jacket, with its distinctive collar secured with brass buttons and cinched at the waist with a white belt. Or perhaps it's that crimson "blood stripe" down the side of precision-pressed trousers.

Maybe the weight of the ribbons and medals makes the wearer stand straighter. Or maybe it's the weight of Marine Corps history, and a little muscle memory of gyrene pride, that makes Marines look like they are standing at attention even when casually chatting and laughing with their friends.Herve Leger

This was my first Marine Corps Birthday Ball. My husband and I attended with Oceanside's Sgt. Maj. "Iron Mike" Mervosh USMC (Ret.), who was the guest of honor at the 1st Supply Battalion Ball. I don't know if any other branch of service celebrates its founding with such tradition and fervor, but I doubt it.

The Marine Corps turned 235 this year just as the Marines ended their combat operations in Iraq. Their war is not over, it only shifted to Afghanistan, as Marines continue their legacy of doing what their country asks of them.

The 1st Supply Battalion held their event on November 19, a bittersweet choice of dates. Some of their unit had returned recently from Afghanistan, and others would soon deploy, but that night they could all be together to honor the Corps and party with their comrades.

If it is possible to stand even straighter, these Marines did so as the national anthem played and the Sword Detail and Color Guard entered the room. Were they remembering those Marines who came before them at Trenton, Belleau Woods, Iwo Jima, Choisin Resevoir, Khe Sanh, Beirut, Fallujah or maybe last week in Helmand Province?

Executive Officer Maj. Michelle Akers used a sword to cut the traditional slice of birthday cake for the oldest and youngest Marine in the unit. Born during the early years of the Vietnam War, Master Sgt. Luther L. Posey didn't seem all that old; born right after the Gulf War, PFC Tiffany N. Williams seemed far too young.

I was struck by how many Marines brought their children to the ball. Behind us sat a couple with their two young ones dressed in party clothes. The dad wore a suit; the mother, a uniform. How difficult deployment must be for them all.

Yes, it's awe-inspiring to be in a room of 700 or so Marines in their dress blues uniform.
